POSITION TITLE: Senior Engineering Manager

REPORTING TO: VP of Engineering

LOCATION: Benton Harbor, MI (Onsite)

SCOPE OF ROLE :

The Senior Engineering Manager will be responsible for management of global applications and new product development processes along with resources to achieve company growth goals. A dynamic leader that can bridge personnel engagement and technical knowledge is key to engineering projects execution while developing talent. Responsible for creating and maintaining budgets (project and department), balancing capabilities and capacity, improving processes, accelerating project execution, while ensuring proper communication and alignment throughout the organization.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES :

  • Personnel management – Goal setting, 1 on 1’s, feedback/accountability, development plans (based on 70/20/10 learning process), and overall guidance of engineering, design, and supporting team members

  • Oversee and guide technical development – Attend 3W meetings, provide technical feedback, assist in troubleshooting, eliminate hurdles, and support project acceleration.

  • Department and project budget management – Develop and manage department budgets for projects, applications, and the pneumatic laboratory

  • Intellectual Property – Manage and own IP process as Gast working with attorney’s to capture, process, and provide guidance with provisional, utility, and design patents.

  • Adherence to engineering processes – Owner of engineering processes (NPD, Applications, Engineering Change, etc.) ensuring organizational awareness and usage of processes

  • Capacity and capability alignment – Understands and aligns engineering resources to projects and activities based on capacity planning and resource capabilities. Creates optimal structure to support organizational goals and targets.

  • Enterprise communication and evaluation – Sharing of major project activities, cross functional team alignment, risk valuation, and timing expectations across the organization

  • Leadership of cross-functional teams – Guide and influence cross functional teams to execute to commitments, eliminate roadblocks, and align on priorities

  • Build relationships and influence others – Proactive and purposeful engagement with all individuals in the organization building trust through conversations with the ability to influence others that do not report to this position

  • Leverage technical experience and expertise to guide optimal design decisions – Utilize sound engineering knowledge and experience to ask questions, provide guidance, and support actions in engineering projects and with problem solving

  • Provides final technical approvals for design reviews – Attend and own technical review process and approvals, ensuring cross functional input and actions captured

  • Develops, executes, and maintains engineering vision – Generate, maintain, and execute engineering vision for acceleration, efficiency, and capability growth with projects and team.

  • 80/20 knowledge and usage – Learn and utilize 80/20 methodologies in engineering activities, simplification, and decisions

  • Product and application knowledge – Learn and understand product capabilities and application knowledge to support strong decision making and guidance

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS OR EQUIVALENCIES :

  • BSME or similar with MS preferred

  • 5+ years of engineering and project management experience in new product development and applications with manufacturing, industrial, pneumatics/hydraulic systems or similar

  • 5+ years of engineering management / leadership experience with demonstrated development of individuals and program management

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with alignment to audience expectations

  • Demonstrated creative problem solving skills with process based approach and methodologies

  • Strong passion for results and bias towards action with commitments

  • Builds trust through others with purposeful approach and engagement

  • Ability to analyze data and decipher key learnings to support strong decision making

  • Natural curiosity to learn and understand technical and personnel situations for optimal judgements

  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to process requirements but flexibility to adapt to changing requirements

  • Scalable to develop into larger engineering role with development and guidance

PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS :

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. May require travel up to 10% of the time. Incumbent must be able to travel.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate in the office. The position requires the incumbent travel to the various manufacturing facilities as much as 10% of the time. The work environment at the facilities can include excessive noise levels, exposure to weather elements, working around or adjacent to moving and mobile equipment and climbing ladders. Appropriate personal protective equipment including hearing protection, steel toe shoes, safety glasses and/or hard hats may be required while working in a facility.
