This Director of Manufacturing has overall responsibility for Manufacturing for the Life Science Optics business lines. The Director of Manufacturing will also assume responsibility for the Finger Lakes Instruments business once moved into the Center of Excellence facility. The position will manage both the team and the capacity allocations for all businesses and has the cost of goods responsibility within specified guidelines. The Director of Manufacturing is responsible for achieving business goals, including customer service, on-time delivery, quality, cost of goods, revenue, earnings, and inventory. This is the most senior Manufacturing position and a critical member of the Life Science Optics Leadership Team.


  • Lead develop and coach a manufacturing organization of 200+ employees. A combination of Direct Labor (DL) and Indirect Labor (IDL) employees are included in the manufacturing and sustaining engineering teams. Approximately 30-35 professional and 150-200 direct labor staff in a 7 day / week x 21 hour / day operation.

  • Establish the strategic direction of the Life Science Optics manufacturing unit, setting the plan for products, processes, and factory relationships with the goal of increasing efficiency and profitability.

  • Lead the manufacturing operations to achieve company goals for product quality, on-time delivery, effective inventory management and manufacturing profit and productivity.

  • Responsible for planning and executing Annual Operating Plan (AOP) and overall responsibility for achieving manufacturing profit targets.

  • Lead the implementation of productivity improvements for all product lines; Work with continuous improvement teams to drive LEAN manufacturing processes and principals throughout the factory.

  • Partner with the Supply Chain team to implement effective inventory management practices to reduce overall costs, improve product quality and assure stable sources of supply.

  • Drive JDE and follow-on improvements to the ERP system functionality in order to facilitate better decision making and efficiency.

  • Lead effective efforts to restructure/eliminate ergonomically adverse manufacturing procedures.

  • Manage preventive maintenance program for equipment and tooling in support of process and product excellence.

  • Drive safety throughout Manufacturing and identify proactive plans to prevent accidents.

  • Develop a talent development and acquisition strategy to continuously improve the manufacturing function.

  • Closely partner with operations leadership to support achievement of Annual Operating Plans.

  • Utilize continuous improvement tools and processes to drive performance improvement.

  • Limited travel will be required to work with critical customers and suppliers as needed.

  • This position is a site-based role.


  • B.S. Degree required; advanced degree highly preferred.

  • Ten or more years in a related manufacturing operations management position with progressively more responsibility.

  • Green Belt level Six Sigma preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand, plan and execute dramatic change in manufacturing structure, systems and philosophy.

  • Must be detail oriented while able to conceive, implement and operate systems and processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results in a cooperative, cross-functional, participative (e.g. matrix) environment.

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in motivating and executing against objectives, policies and procedures through team, including non-exempt associates.

  • Strong operational excellence background required and is customer focused.

  • Experience in low volume/high mix manufacturing.


  • Ability to negotiate, cooperate and effectively interact with peers, superiors, team and vendors to achieve results.

  • Outstanding demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.

  • Good ability to use PC & ERP tools for communication, data extraction, and analysis. JDE knowledge a plus.

  • Ability to independently perform financial and operational assessments of new projects or systems and current activities using PC based software.

  • Previous experience organizing and driving effective daily management meetings through an organization

  • Must be able to travel to customer/supplier sites throughout the world.
