POSITION OVERVIEW AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

IDEX Health & Science is seeking a talented Engineer to join its product development team. The position’s primary responsibility is the development of fluidic product solutions for OEM instrumentation needs in the Biotech and In Vitro Diagnostics markets. This role’s work ranges from the fuzzy, innovative front-end to the execution of details to support product releases. In doing this, the role is involved in understanding customer application challenges, extracting and defining product requirements, developing and testing concepts, and creating specifications for new solutions and products. The Product Development Engineer needs to apply engineering skills and experience, the scientific method, and new learnings to develop and advance solutions. The role will be hand-on as building prototypes, conducting testing, and developing new knowledge are a key part of learning and developing new solutions. A hybrid work model is an available option that allows for flexibility and team interaction.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Works with product managers, sales, and customers to define needs and requirements.

  • Leads the technical efforts for new product development projects.

  • Applies engineering theories, tools and research techniques to solve technical challenges.

  • Executes design creation, concept prototypes, cost analysis, and performance verification.

  • Analyzes designs for application fit, performance needs, and design for manufacture.

  • Manages project work using established processes and project management tools.

  • Supports investigation, analysis and problem solving of complex quality items.

  • Develops expertise on relevant IDEX Health and Science technologies and products.

  • Investigates and remains current on new technology to generate new ideas and insights.

  • Communicates clearly and effectively with internal and external functional teams – orally, in written form, and via presentations.

  • Attends relevant trade shows and assists in the preparation of product demonstrations and substantiation of marketing claims.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BS degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or similar degree with 2-3 years of relevant experience.

  • A proven ability to develop concepts into working designs

  • Embraces the scientific method with experience in conducting tests and use of Design of Experiments (DOE) techniques.

  • Experience applying mathematical and computational analysis to solve engineering problems, including use of modeling and simulation tools.

  • Experience with use of electro-mechanical devices and test equipment (fluid control devices such as valves, pumps, sensors is preferred).

  • Able to use 3D CAD software (SolidWorks) to create models and drawings for concepts and early development needs.

  • An understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).

  • Familiar with the use of Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Design for Manufacturability (DFM) techniques.

  • Proficiency in the use of business software tools (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint) and a proven ability to quickly learn and use new software tools.

  • An established self-starter with the ability to work independently while supporting a culture of team, open communication, knowledge sharing, and a willingness to try/test/learn.

  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.

  • Experience interfacing with external customers and suppliers.

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  • General office area, engineering laboratory, and manufacturing facility.

  • Able to operate various types of test equipment and tools, perform experiments, build prototypes and complete work at a desk.

  • Able to travel (<10%) via plane/car/bus/train as required, domestic and international, and is comfortable traveling to locations where customs and cultures are unfamiliar.

  • Ability to lift up to 5 pounds, move within an office complex and outside in the field.

  • Vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus and visual acuity for reading a computer screen and handwritten/typewritten documents, and experiment observation.

  • Operates under limited supervision from Engineering Manager, communicates to remote sites, and interfaces within Engineering and all other departments.

  • Communicate via phone, computer, and in-person situations.
