POSITION OVERVIEW AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
IDEX Health & Science is looking for a talented, self-motivated Engineering Technologist to join its product development team in Rohnert Park, California. IDEX designs, develops, and manufactures optimized life science original equipment manufacturer (OEM) fluidic systems and precision components. Creating innovative solutions for our customers’ increasingly complex instrumentation needs directly contributes to improved diagnoses and treatments, and thus, we help improve outcomes and save lives.
The Engineering Technologist is a lab-centric position in the R&D Engineering team. This role plays a critical part in the product development process by testing new concepts, building prototypes, verifying product designs and providing insights as a part of the design team. Experimental setup, performance testing, life testing, failure analysis, and data analysis are core tasks for this role. The Engineering Technologist is expected to be a “hands-on” expert of IDEX products and other fluidic components that include manifold assemblies, rotary shear valves, precision displacement pumps, solenoid valves, fluid sensors, degassers, and the software and controls needed to operate these items. The Engineering Technologist is involved in the development and transfer of new assembly and test processes and also supports the engineering laboratory’s operation, maintenance and improvements.
The Engineering Technologist position is a part of a Research, Development and Engineering team that is geographically distributed among several sites. This role will receive guidance for work priorities and have support for challenges and questions. The person filling this role will have high autonomy, but she or he must be comfortable working afar from direct supervision and be driven, organized, and practice personal accountability.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
During the process of going from idea to concept to product, it is essential to have methodical documentation of prototype builds, experimental setups and data collection. Thus, attention to detail and organization skills are important for execution. Testing is carried out at various points in the process for learning, performance verification, benchmarking and product or process validation. Developing test procedures, test methods and initial work instructions help transfer the concept into production. In addition, the Engineering Technologist works through troubleshooting and identifies potential challenges, communicating insights to the team. Application of basic geometry, algebra, and statistics aids in analysis and decision-making. Metrology tools are used to ensure that the product meets specifications and tolerances. Maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies is a vital function to ensure that data generated is robust and valid.
The ability to balance task work, manage priorities, and maintain project timelines is a critical core competency. The ideal candidate can work independently and escalate issues in a timely manner through proper communication chains. A seasoned, experienced professional with either an Associate Degree (two year) in a technical discipline or HS Diploma/GED and ten or more years of relevant Life Science or laboratory experience is required for consideration of this position. It is essential to be able to demonstrate “hands-on” electromechanical aptitude – for prototyping, building test fixtures and setting up equipment. Previous experience conducting testing of materials and products and demonstrated use of the scientific method is mandatory. Experience using electromechanical test equipment, tools, and inspection/measurement devices is also required. The candidate must be able to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways and balance multiple project needs.
Communication of test results is a critical component of this position. Demonstrated proficiency in using MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and general computer skills (Windows-based software) is compulsory. Skill in technical writing – test plans and specifications, test procedures, work instructions, data summaries, and test reports is a key requirement. Comfort with communicating test results and experimental findings to customers, core team members and larger groups is also key to success in this position.
We need a proven self-starter with the ability to work independently while supporting a culture of accountability, team orientation and a focus on successful outcomes. Ability to take ownership of assigned project process, procedure and outcome is a key component of the position.
Previous experience with data analysis, statistics, and experimental design, along with creation and execution of test plans/methods would be advantageous. In addition, familiarity with PCBs, soldering and wiring diagrams and the ability to program/run LabView, Python software or other programming language would be valuable skills for this position. A familiarity with metrology systems: Zygo Zegage, Keyence VHX, Zeiss Stemi 2000-C would decrease training time and allow for a faster training trajectory for the ideal candidate. Background knowledge of precision machining processes, injection molding, and/or plastics extrusion would be highly valued. A candidate with basic design and/or CAD skills would also be preferred.
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Able to move in a laboratory, operate various types of equipment and tools, perform experiments, build prototypes and complete work at a desk.
Limited travel (<5%), but must be able to travel via plane/car/bus/train as required.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and move within an office complex, laboratory, manufacturing floor and outside in the field.
Vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus and visual acuity for reading a computer screen and handwritten/typewritten documents, and experiment observation.
Speaking and hearing ability for telephone and in-person communications.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
Ability to deal with problems involving multiple variables in non-standardized situations.
