The laser manufacturing engineer will be a key resource for the manufacturing engineering team. They will be the expert with direct technical oversight of the laser manufacturing line. The Laser manufacturing engineer will also serve as a mentor and consultant for technicians who are assigned to perform production tasks and trouble-shoot problems in manufacturing. The role interfaces with Melles Griot’s internal customers including: the internal sales team, the sourcing and purchasing teams, production technicians, and operations managers in order to manage, and continually improve laser production value streams.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assist the engineering team to move the laser and systems production from California to New York.During the move the manufacturing engineer will have opportunities to optimize the process before validating manufacturing in Rochester, New York.

  • Works closely with the production manager to monitor the performance of the value stream for key metrics of Safety, Quality, First-Pass Yield, Cycle time, and Up-time.

  • Monitor control charts for all processes within the value streams and adjust processes as necessary in response to control limit excursions.

  • Document and verify standard work procedures for the production teams.

  • Support and maintain the stability of the day-to-day manufacturing issues surrounding their value streams.

  • Coordinate and support the teams as necessary, monitor daily metrics and run weekly team reviews to insure that processes are stable.

  • Participate on team efforts to develop and deploy test fixtures and automation.

  • Documents all new processes and procedures.

  • Train manufacturing personnel in new and existing processes and/or procedures.

  • Collect and interpret manufacturing data in order to support production, develop solutions for production issues, justify improvement efforts and assist with resource allocations.

  • This job position requires compliance with ITAR Regulations. Therefore, all employees working in this capacity must meet the requirement of the Melles Griot Export Controls Policy and Procedure, including the requirement that the employee must be a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. Permanent Resident .

  • Ability to work with test technicians to develop and debug test procedures

  • Hands-on laboratory skills for assembly, alignment, calibration, and evaluation of optical systems.

  • EDUCATION/TRAINING/WORK RELATED EXPERIENCE : Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A) in Electrical Engineering, Laser, Physics or Optical Engineering from four-year college or university; 5 or more years relevant work experience.Electronics troubleshooting, circuit analysis, vendor management and component obsolescence preferred.

  • LANGUAGE SKILLS : Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customer’s quality representatives or engineers.Ability to effectively present information to top management and customers.

  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS : Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

  • REASONING ABILITY : Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
