POSITION SUMMARY
The Machinist sets up and operates manually controlled machines with skilled precision and bench work in the fabrication, maintenance, repair, and alteration of machinery, machine parts, tools, and equipment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and Vernier calipers
Use precision tools, machinery, and equipment such as lathe, vertical milling machine, drill press, hydraulic press, band saw, and a variety of cutting tools and equipment
Measure, examine, and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers
Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines
Modify and repair machine components for production, i.e. work orders in-house/in-house conversions and re-work of parts
Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions and to determine need for adjustments or repairs
Operate equipment to verify operational efficiency
Perform daily and regular cleaning and light maintenance tasks on machinery and equipment
Confer with engineering, supervisory, and manufacturing personnel to exchange technical information
Dismantle machines or equipment, using hand and power tools, to examine parts for defects and replace defective parts where needed
Fit and assemble parts to make or repair machine tools
May also assist as needed in designing and machining fixtures, tooling, and experimental (i.e. prototype) parts to meet special engineering needs
Assist in some trouble shooting on the Production floor
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Experience
3 years’ minimum machining experience (set up and operate)
Experience in using and/or programming manual, semi-automated, or automated tools and machines (lathes, grinders etc.)
Education
High school diploma or equivalent
Machining Certification preferred
Competencies
Use precision tools (e.g. calipers) to take accurate measurements.
Proficiency with precision measurement equipment
Strong knowledge/skill interpreting engineering drawings and specifications
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office
Knowledge of the properties of metal and other material
Maintain a neat and organized area
Strong communication skills
Work well in a group and individually
