IDEX Senior Electrical Engineer in Columbus, Ohio

Responsible for designing and developing embedded hardware for the Vehicular Fire, Military, and Industrial firefighting markets. Provide electronics engineering support to mechanical and technical service departments. Ensure that electronics engineering design requirements are properly implemented and documented. Verify that electrical/electronic requirements are properly met against the product specification and results are documented to ensure that reliability, and cost requirements are achieved.

REPORTS TO (Title) : Manager - Electronics Engineering


  • Design, develop, test, and document embedded electronics hardware for vehicular Fire, Military, and Industrial firefighting markets.

  • Develop schematics, specify components, ensure designs are documented and conform to design requirements.

  • Perform spice simulation to confirm design meets requirements.

  • PCB board layout.

  • Product design validation and reliability testing.

  • Test plan creation, execution, and report generation.

  • Test fixture design.

  • Provides production test support as needed.

  • Assist technical service department with quick identification of product failure modes and countermeasures.

  • Performs sustaining engineering work, including approving alternate components, and obsolete component replacement.

  • Perform root cause failure analysis of warranty returns.

  • Support electronics needs of mechanical engineering and reliability engineering teams.


  • Circuit design experience with microprocessors, switching power supplies, analog signal conditioning, digital circuits, and DC motor drives.

  • Experience with CE and UL product certification.

  • Altium Schematic Capture and PCB Layout Experience desired.

  • Experience with Advance Product Quality Planning (APQP) development steps including Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis (DFMEA), design reviews, and design validation.

  • Experience with stage gate product development process.

  • Knowledge of industry standards such as Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), Department of Transportation (DOT), Military Standards, and ISO standards is preferred.

  • Excellent problem solving, documentation, and record keeping skills.

  • Familiarity with automotive Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing requirements (RF Immunity & Emissions, Electrostatic Discharge).

  • Experience with heavy truck or industrial control electronics is a plus.

  • Demonstrated experience with basic laboratory test equipment.

  • Experience with wireless technology (Wi-Fi, LoRa, NFC, and Bluetooth is a plus).

  • Experience with inductive charging and battery technology is a plus.

  • Experience with CAN networking is a plus.

  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Visio and Outlook


  • BSEE,BSET or significant technical background combined with work experience.

  • 8-10 years of experience and established track record with embedded hardware development.

The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to twenty-five pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate typical of an office with occasional work requiring hearing and eye protection.
