The Design Engineer will function in a dynamic Product Development Team and is primarily responsible to develop micro controller based embedded software for electronic products (instrumentation
and control systems), which are typically installed on emergency vehicles such as Fire Trucks and Ambulances. In addition, the Design Engineer is responsible to support some electronics hardware and conduct product/system verification/validation tests on various types of hardware. Approximately 90% of the engineering work is software related.
Position requirements include, but are not limited to:
Design, Develop, and Troubleshoot micro controlled based embedded software solutions for automotive electronic products (instrumentation and control systems). The typical system is installed on an emergency vehicle (Fire Truck, Ambulance) and reads/processes various electronic sensor data (i.e. pressure, temperature, fluid level, etc either directly or via a CAN communication bus, actively controls a system (i.e. engine, pump, valves, etc.) in an closed loop configuration, responds to user interface commands (i.e., operators panel), and provides the operator with visual feedback (i.e., display, indicators, etc.). Interface with a variety of new and existing components and systems to achieve total system performance.
Establish test plans to verify/validate new/modified software or system designs or benchmark existing designs.
Translate concepts and specifications into fully functional and documented software solutions.
Conduct and document required verification and validation tests for new products.
Analyze customer requirements and test results and propose technical solutions and product specifications for new products or modified products.
Coordinate technical product deliverables by working directly with the product development team and specialized suppliers in a global environment.
Work as part of a local or global interdisciplinary team through all phases of a product design and development.
Assist internal and external customers with specialized product support during the engineering phase and/or immediately after a product release.
Ability to produce creative solutions in a fast paced multi-tasking environment.

Ability to translate abstract concepts and requirements into concrete designs.
Experiencewith developing embedded software for electronicproducts industrial or automotive instrumentation and closed controlsystems, which read and process sensor data, respond to user interfacecommands, and provide visual operator feedback.
Experience with the SAE J1939 CAN bus communication protocol is a plus.
Experience with designing electronics circuitry for optimal EMI/EMC performance is a plus.
Real time closed loop control experience with micro controllers is a plus.
Application experience with controlling or interfacing with Internal Combustion Engines, Heavy Duty Custom Trucks, and industrial pumps is a plus.
Experience with compliance testing: SAE (EMI/EMC, Vibration and Shock, Environmental), E-Mark, and CE-Mark is a plus.
Windows .NET application development in C# using Microsoft Visual Studio is a plus.
Experience with Microsoft Visual Basic 6 is a plus.
Experience in progressive disciplines such as Six-Sigma and 6/S is a plus.
Ability to work well with variety of people and cultures in a small local engineering group interfacing with remote sites and the larger global environment.
Ability to work with a limited amount of supervision.
Coordination skills to work and guide an interdisciplinary team and external suppliers.
Experience with a new product development stage gate process (or similar) is a plus.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Education & Experience
Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering or equivalent four-year technical degree with a minimum of five (5) years of progressive varied engineering experience including the embedded software design for automotive or industrial electronic productsinstrumentation and control systems.
The ideal candidate will have proven experience in engineering development software such as Altium Designer (Protel), Embedded C for electronic products, advanced debugging tools and processes, real-time operating systems (RTOS), Microsoft Office Suite, andSolid Works. Database and business management software (i.e. J.D. Edwards, InforERPSL) experience is beneficial.
