PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Design complex industrial tooling, fixtures, gaging, and special equipment for machining and foundry processes.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Plan, coordinate, develop and design new concepts and tool designs for complex tools, fixtures, lifting devices, gages, and auxiliary equipment to facilitate the implementation of new and revised products for the core manufacturing processes within timeline and budgetary considerations.
Designs and specifies hydraulic and pneumatic devices, hydrostatic testing equipment, and assembly tools.
Makes calculations for simple force systems and positioning.
Must maintain a thorough knowledge of CAD including record maintenance, directory set-ups, and training assistance.
Must maintain a high level of technical tooling and fixture knowledge.
Create and process Manufacturing Design Requests (MDR).
Assure that all design work meets pertinent industry standards, particularly safety and quality.
Exercises constant creative thinking in design work and utilizes knowledge of basic engineering principles, equipment, or design practices and current manufacturing methods and procedures.
Aid in the selection, recommendation, and usage of materials and components.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Two-year technical degree in Tool and Diemaking or similar, and at least three years of related experience in design or machining, required
BS in Industrial Technology, Engineering or similar preferred.
OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires technical skills such as the knowledge of manufacturing practices, basic mathematics skills and must possess sound drafting capabilities.
Good working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) theory and manufacturing practices
Strong understanding of engineering principles, manufacturing processes and shop capabilities, and basic application experience of the concepts of stress and material science.
Extensive knowledge of shop safety and ergonomics and their impact on the tooling process
Works with minimum supervision of the Toolroom Manager.
Original ideas, concepts, and good mechanical aptitude are basic requirements.
Must be willing to take positive action to advance their personal knowledge of new techniques pertinent to tool and equipment design, manufacturing, and related areas.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
Proficient with Microsoft Office products including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Proficient with AutoDesk’s Inventor (3D) and AutoCad (2D) products desired or experience with other CAD software.
WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to move within office and manufacturing complex, write by hand and keyboard, and perform general office functions.
Ability to communicate by speech and hearing via phone and in person.
Visual acuity needed for close detail work and computer use.
General manufacturing, foundry, warehouse and office environment.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Must have the ability to effectively communicate with customers, suppliers and all levels of corporate and company personnel.
Must be able to work and communicate well with personnel in the various departments, shop personnel, and outside vendors.
