IDEX Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist in Cedar Falls, Iowa

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Primary functions are to: (1) Provide technical environmental, health and safety support to production and office personnel, (2) develop environmental, health and safety programs and objectives and coordinate safety training programs, (3) monitor environmental, health and safety regulations and provide technical support to plant and office personnel to ensure compliance with Federal and State environmental, health and safety regulations.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare necessary safety and environmental reports for local, state and federal agencies throughout the year. Coordinate required sampling for the various reports.

  • Develop applications for new permits for air, water and solid waste as required due to new processes or regulations. Renew and revise existing permits as required.

  • Develop and organize safety and environmental procedures. Train appropriate personnel on relevant procedures.

  • Track the quantities and disposal methods for all waste streams generated at Viking Pump facilities.

  • Continually search for alternative methods and processes to reduce or alleviate the generation of waste materials and improve the safety performance of Viking Pump facilities.

  • Ensure Company safety and environmental programs and procedures are current with safety and environmental regulations.

  • Maintain SDS database and files.

  • Provide technical support to office and plant personnel to ensure compliance with applicable occupational safety, environmental and health regulations.

  • Participate in new product/process reviews including process hazard analyses, Operator Training, etc.

  • Update safety programs and conduct on-going safety training (i.e., fork truck driver licensing, hot metal handling, lockout procedures, ladder safety, chemical handling, safe use of abrasive grinning equipment, confined space, HazCom and others as needed).

  • Periodically audit practices and records of manufacturing operations to ensure compliance with company programs and Federal/State occupational safety, environmental and health regulations.

  • Perform noise level dosimetry and coordinate annual industrial hygiene testing in production locations. Conduct Hearing Conservation training for all employees exposed to noise levels in excess of PELS.

  • Coordinate spirometry testing and respiratory protection training for employees requiring the use of respirators.

  • Coordinate First Aid, CPR and Blood Born Pathogens training for supervisors and lead persons.

  • Coordinate investigation of all accidents, including assurance that timely reporting has been accomplished and any hazards observed are removed.

  • Promote safety and health awareness through internal company memoranda, newsletters, and specific training programs.

  • Support plant personnel in selection of appropriate personal protective equipment. Maintain inventory of medical and safety supplies.

  • Assist in the development of annual company environmental, health and safety goals.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in business, manufacturing, science, engineering or other related field.

  • Previous experience with environmental and/or safety programs in a manufacturing company.

OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of environmental and safety regulations.

  • Strong initiative, excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, and Outlook.

WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to move within office and manufacturing complex, write by hand and keyboard, and perform general office functions.

  • Ability to communicate by speech and hearing via phone and in person.

  • Visual acuity needed for close detail work and computer use.

  • General manufacturing, warehouse, office, and foundry environment.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

  • Must have the ability to effectively communicate with employees at all levels of the organization, enlisting the needed cooperation for successful implementation of programs and other measures needed to comply with regulatory requirements.

  • Works with regulatory agencies at local, state and federal levels. Contact with safety and environmental consultants, outside laboratory contractors, waste disposal/transportation subcontractors as required.
