The Development Engineer designs and develops scientific and custom programs for electronic instrumentation, testing, and data analysis systems. The role will contribute to the diverse markets we serve, including optical components and coatings, optical shutters, and optomechanical assemblies. In additional to the technical requirements, the successful candidate for this role will be highly skilled in cross-departmental communication and documenting engineering processes at all stages of the product life cycle from design to production.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Designs, develops, tests, reviews, and updates existing programs, software, and associated instrumentation used for existing tools and capabilities as well as for new product development efforts.
Develops and maintains automated data collection and analysis tools and data repositories.
Identifies opportunities for improvement, recommends and leads research and modification projects.
Provides procedural documentation, drawings and specifications to inform others on how to fabricate, construct, assemble and maintain newly developed and revised products (both hardware and software).
Provides engineering support to production departments.
Ensures changes in products/production are effectively communicated to all affected.
Directs technicians as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Engineering.

PROFESSIONAL, EDUCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree in applied physics, electrical engineering, or equivalent field.
Experience in scientific programming (such as LabView, Python, MATLAB, or equivalents) for instrumentation control, data acquisition, and data analysis.
Experience with statistical data collection and analysis, and data driven solution implementation.
Experience with firmware/software development for board-level and/or systems-level design.
5+ years’ relevant experience
Experience with software and documentation control best practices
Experience with New Product Development (NPD) stage gate processes.
Experience with process flow mapping, failure mode effects analysis, and/or control plan development.
Experienced in design failure root cause investigations.
Knowledge of FPGA and/or PLC programming and processing.
Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Bend as is necessary for sitting, using computers, using the telephone, and computer mouse
Demonstrate eye-hand coordination
Operate testing and measuring equipment
Bend as is necessary for lifting from waist to operate testing equipment
Apply force to adjust and operate testing equipment, turn knobs and cranks
Manipulate fragile parts into and out of equipment to measure size and shape
Grasp objects in order to turn, wipe, adjust instrumentation and safely use sharp instruments
Twist and turn wrists and forearms to perform inspection of optics and to operate testing equipment and computer
Bend at the neck to perform inspection and testing of optics and related equipment
Perform legible written communication.
Ability to work in a Class 1000 clean room environment wearing appropriate PPE.
This position requires compliance with ITAR Regulations; this person must be a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. Permanent Resident.
