optical thin-film filters that set the standard for biotech and analytical

instrumentation.. Major markets include optical filters for fluorescence

imaging and measurement systems, for Raman spectroscopy systems, and for

laser-based analytical instrumentation.

Position Description

Semrock is currently looking for a talented engineer to join its seasoned

team of optical thin-film filter designers in our RD&E group. The right

candidate will have a proven ability to design and assemble custom optical

metrology equipment to be used in our manufacturing environment to test

thin-film optical filters. The types of measurements that we are interested

in include transmission (high transmission, deep-blocking and steep edges)

versus wavelength and AOI, reflection (especially AR’s and HR’s) versus

wavelength and AOI, flatness (TWE, RWE) at various wavelengths, and other

properties such as GD and GDD in transmission or reflection. While an

extensive knowledge of thin-film filters is a plus, it is acceptable to

have a solid understanding of optical metrology equipment and the ability

to learn quickly. It is also expected that the successful candidate will

demonstrate an interest and aptitude for learning thin-film filter design

and optimization. Role is based in Rochester, New York and reports to the

Director of RD&E.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Enhance Semrock’s product capabilities by introducing new measurement

capabilities

  • Grow into a key role on our team that designs new thin-film optical

filters

  • Invent, design, construct, commission, and transfer to manufacturing new,

sophisticated, customized optical metrology equipment for measuring

state-of-the-art thin-film optical filters

  • This role is both the technical lead and project manager for deploying

new metrology equipment; this role also owns the multi-year roadmap for

developing the company’s metrology capabilities, setting new industry

standards

  • Work with applications engineers to support customer product development

activities, specification development, and design estimates (often speaking

directly with customers) especially for products with advanced measurement

requirements

  • Work with Metrology Engineer in manufacturing area for successful

deployment of new equipment; Interact with manufacturing personnel as

required; and understand how metrology equipment is most efficiently used

in production

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant scientific, engineering, or

mathematical discipline, such as Physics, Optics, Optical Engineering, or

Electrical Engineering

  • Experience delivering results under time and budget constraints;

  • Experience in commissioning metrology equipment for a production

environment understanding precision & accuracy, creating standard

work processes, and performing a gauge R&R study

  • Experience in designing and building optical instrumentation or metrology

equipment, especially the combination of optics, electronics, mechanics,

and automation; experience with lasers, LED’s, and other light sources

  • Experience in performing optical measurements of various types,

especially of transmission, blocking, and reflection versus wavelength and

AOI of thin-film optical filters

  • Experience using optical design software such as Zemax and mechanical

design software such as SolidWorks

  • Familiarity with the capabilities of commercial optical metrology

equipment to facilitate make versus buy decisions

  • Programming experience in C#, C++, CUDA, or Matlab desired
