IDEX Health & Science's Melles Griot line of products is comprised of a
Light Sources Group and an Optical Systems Group. The Light Sources Group
manufactures a variety of visible, low to moderate power lasers and laser
based systems uniquely designed for consistent performance. The Light
Sources Group offers three basic types of lasers: gas (helium neon and ion
lasers), diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers, and semiconductor diode
laser assemblies. The Optical Systems Group provides the design, prototype
and low to mid volume manufacturing of custom lens assemblies and optical
systems. The Optical Systems Group also specializes in the design of
reliable shutter mechanisms and assemblies.
The Director of Engineering manages, guides, audits and coordinates the
work of a highly skilled engineering and product development team placing
particular emphasis on developing new engineering solutions and products
consistent with the appropriate time-lines and budgets. The Director of
Engineering supports the company in reaching its profit and growth goals
and positively interacts with all other departments to resolve problems
where engineering or engineering department solutions are required. As part
of the senior staff, the Director of Engineering actively participates in
helping to make decisions that affect all aspects of the business unit.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Direction and coordination of all engineering activities and personnel.
Responsible for career pathing and development of Engineering Team.
Participates as key member of strategic planning of technologydevelopment.
Serves as key technical spokesperson for IDEX Optical Systems Group.
Participates in proposal development and owns NRE estimates andtechnical statements of work.
Develops cost effective, manufacturable and appropriate designs.
Completes designs as per schedule and budget.
Raises cost consciousness of department.
Works cooperatively with other IDEX sites to support multi-siteopportunities.
Leads and promotes interaction with other departments including: manufacturing engineering, operations, QC, assembly and othermanufacturing, and supports organization personnel.
Promotes teamwork inside and outside of Engineering Department
Manages and consistently implements the Peer Design Review Process toimprove the appropriateness, cost-effectiveness and accuracy of alldepartmental design activities.
Responsible for all Engineering deliverables.
Assists the product management, sales and marketing organizations tomaximize the competitiveness and responsiveness of our product andprocesses.
Provides budgets to support the planning processes and manages coststhroughout the year consistent with approved expense strategies andbudgets.

OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Demonstrates high level of understanding of optical imaging systems.
Has the ability to read and understand financial statements andbudgets.
Possesses a deep working knowledge of the optics marketplace and theposition of the company’s products within our primary markets.
Manages engineering department documentation flow including engineeringreleases.
Demonstrated high-level leadership and motivation skills.
Demonstrates strong ability to effectively communicate with otherdepartments, vendors, customers and employees.
Has the ability to manage workloads and meet schedule requirements aspriorities change.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/WORK RELATED EXPERIENCE:
Fifth year college or university program certificate and minimum of 8 years
related experience providing technical direction to a staff and their
direct reports; or equivalent combination. Must be adept at collaborating
with all functional groups within the organization building and maintaining
Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical
journals, financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to
common inquiries or complaints from customer’s regulatory agencies, or
members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles
for publication that conforms to prescribe style and format; ability to
effectively present information to top management, and public groups.
Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern
algebra, and advanced statistical theory; ability to work with concepts
such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations, and proofs of
